Message coils and injectors. CAS gets driven via timing belt as it drives the engine's overhead cams. CAS mechanically attaches to one of the cams.

The ECU in turn reads the CAS timing signal and tells the injectors and coils to do their thing. Electronically the ECU CAN connect directly to the injectors since injectors (electrically) have pretty low power consumption requirements. The coils however are a whole other thing (at least for late '80s technology) and the ECU needs a little help firing them.

The PTU is just a high powered driver (switch) that allows the ECU to send a low power signal in and the PTU takes that signal and conditions it for the higher current (power) required by the coil packs. So if the PTU is getting the ECU (in) signal but the coil pack isn't firing -- could be a PTU issue. If the PTU is NOT getting an ECU signal - then either the wiring or the ECU is the issue...
